COLUMBUS, Ohio — The owner of the Bier Stube is updating patrons on efforts to reopen the iconic campus-area establishment after facing unexpected renovation delays at its new location.
Craig Kempton, owner of the Bier Stube, shared a progress report on social media regarding the bar’s move to 234 King Ave. in Columbus, Ohio. The new venue is the former site of Junior’s Bar and Grill, located just blocks from the bar’s original home.
The original Bier Stube first opened near Ohio State in 1966. In fall 2024, the structure was demolished to make way for a 13-story high-rise development.
Rebuilding efforts have taken longer than planned due to setback issues with bringing the building up to code. According to the Franklin County auditor, the King Avenue building was constructed in 1920. Kempton explained that the 100-year-old structure required extensive work on the interior due to years of neglect, though structural progress is moving forward.
State liquor license records show the Bier Stube is currently awaiting approval for a location transfer so it can legally resume selling alcohol.
Despite the delays, Kempton expressed optimism about completing renovations in time to welcome customers for college football games. Marking the milestone, Kempton introduced a new T-shirt featuring a Superman-inspired logo and the phrase “Bier Stube / We Back,” expressing gratitude to patrons for their continued support and patience.
