A Columbus, Ohio resident who dropped his truck off for servicing at a local dealership recently learned it was stolen directly from the lot, highlighting a broader pattern of vehicle and property thefts along Auto Mall Drive.

Dan Cain took his truck to Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM on Auto Mall Drive, off Georgesville Road, for repairs. After going a week without an update, Cain visited the business in person. Staff initially told him his truck was inside the service shop being worked on. However, shortly after he left, dealership employees called Cain to report that his vehicle had been stolen off the lot the previous night.

Columbus police eventually recovered the truck, which had a smashed front end and a broken rear passenger window. According to Cain, when he sought explanations from dealership representatives, they told him to contact his insurance company and stated that the dealership was also a victim.

Records compiled by NBC4 Investigates through Columbus police incident reports indicate the incident is part of a larger trend affecting auto dealerships along the Auto Mall Drive loop. More than 60 vehicles or license plates have been reported stolen from dealerships in that area since 2023.

Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM recorded the highest number of theft reports on the strip, with 22 incidents involving stolen vehicles or license plates between January 2023 and July. The location with the second-highest number of reports recorded 15 during the same period.

Efforts to obtain information regarding the dealership’s security protocols and steps taken to prevent further thefts were unsuccessful after an attorney and representatives for Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM stopped responding to inquiries.
