A young girl estimated to be between 5 and 10 years old is in critical condition after being shot on Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The incident took place at a residence in the 1200 block of North Sixth Street near Weinland Park.
The Columbus Division of Police responded to the home shortly after 3 p.m. following a call reporting that a child had accidentally shot herself. When officers arrived, they discovered several children and teenagers present inside the house. Emergency responders transported the victim to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Although initial reports indicated the child may have shot herself, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that another person fired the weapon. Detectives are searching for a witness under 18 years old, who is not related to the victim, after he fled the scene on foot.
Sgt. Joe Albert raised concerns regarding firearm safety following the shooting, identifying unsecured weapons as a major issue in the city. Albert urged gun owners to lock up their firearms and emphasized that whether the incident was self-inflicted or caused by someone else, a young child should never have been shot.
Omar Abdellatif, who lives in the neighborhood, expressed distress over gun violence occurring near his home, noting how common such incidents have become and voicing concern over children gaining access to firearms.
