CROOKSVILLE, Ohio — Federal, state, and local emergency officials conducted preliminary damage assessments in Perry County, Ohio, on Thursday following severe storms and flooding that struck the area two weeks ago.

Governor Mike DeWine requested the Federal Emergency Management Agency to survey structural damage across Ohio to determine whether federal assistance is necessary. Officials visited flood-damaged homes and properties in the village of Crooksville, Ohio, where rising waters displaced dozens of local residents.

Floodwaters severely impacted residential areas, including an apartment complex where displaced families are currently searching for new housing. Village residents Lisa Kirby and Cathy Baker highlighted the severe toll on the community and expressed hope for quick federal relief.

Assessment reports will be forwarded to Governor DeWine, who will evaluate the findings before deciding whether to formally ask President Trump for a major disaster declaration.

If federal aid is declared, assistance provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency would come in the form of direct grants that do not need to be repaid. Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration are also inspecting the region to evaluate eligibility for low-interest, long-term disaster loans to support homeowners, renters, and local businesses.
