Whitehall, Ohio – Governor Mike DeWine joined members of the Columbus Crew at Kae Avenue Elementary on Monday morning for a pep rally focused on student attendance and reading literacy. The event also highlighted the importance of free eye screenings for children across Ohio.

The Ohio Student Eye Exam (OhioSEE) program provided free eye screenings during the rally. This initiative is currently used by 247 school districts statewide, offering eye exams and, if necessary, glasses to students in kindergarten through third grade.

Governor DeWine emphasized the goal of the program. “We need to have every single child in the state who needs that eye exam to be able to get it,” DeWine stated. “We’re making great progress, but the goal has to be every child in the state.”

The pep rally also aimed to encourage better student attendance. Mary Shepro, president of business operations for the Columbus Crew, noted that chronic absenteeism significantly increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shepro explained the motivation behind the Crew’s involvement: “Coming out of Covid, really, we talk with superintendents around the state and we kept hearing how chronic absenteeism had really increased during the pandemic and that, of course, our kids can’t learn if they’re not here at school. We wanted to make sure that we could use the power of sports to help contribute to fixing the problem.”

The event underscored the critical link between student health, consistent school attendance, and academic success for young learners.
