Authorities in Groveport, Ohio, are asking for the public’s help to identify a driver who drove through the city cemetery over the weekend, damaging headstones and breaching the perimeter fence.

Investigators with the Groveport Police Department reported that a vehicle crashed through the cemetery fence in two separate spots. At least two headstones were knocked over, and several others were damaged. Debris left behind at the scene has led officers to search for a blue Mazda sedan with noticeable damage to its front end and undercarriage.

Since the incident, municipal crews have cleaned up the site, fixed the damaged fence, and set the knocked-over headstones back upright. City leadership assured family members of those buried at the site that damaged headstones will be completely restored.

Shawn Cleary, a member of the Groveport City Council who has served on the municipal cemetery committee for about 15 years, noted the deep personal impact of the event, stating that the cemetery is sacred ground and that he personally knew some of the deceased whose memorials were impacted.

Groveport Police Department Lt. Josh Short emphasized that local law enforcement takes the incident personally due to the cemetery’s connection to the town’s history and heritage. Police stated that they are following up on active leads to bring resolution to the community and peace of mind to affected relatives.
