REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — U.S. Sen. Jon Husted visited Reynoldsburg, Ohio, on Friday, August 28, 2026, to survey storm damage alongside representatives from the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency.

During the tour, Husted inspected washed-out basements and viewed a home that had been taped off after being rendered completely uninhabitable by floodwaters.

Speaking on the urgency of the situation, Husted called for an expedited process to secure federal assistance. For federal relief to be granted, Gov. Mike Devine must first request a major disaster declaration, which then moves through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and President Donald Trump.

“Let’s do this all together,” Husted said. “Let’s get it done fast. Let’s get them the resources they need. Bureaucracy can kill from a time point of view.” He added that he intends to communicate what he observed directly to all involved agencies.

Reynoldsburg Mayor Joe Begeny explained that municipal efforts are underway, including providing dumpsters that have enabled workers and residents to clear approximately 125 tons of debris. However, Begeny emphasized that municipal and state resources alone are not enough, particularly for impacted residents who lack flood insurance.

“Anytime that we can get the attention of anybody that can provide additional resources at a higher level than the municipal or state, it’s going to be a good thing because this is all about our residents,” Begeny said.

For many neighborhood residents, the latest storm represents their third major flooding event within the past six years. Addressing long-term solutions, Husted noted that local leaders may need to consider buyouts and land restoration to prevent future damage.

“May end up needing to relocate all of the homeowners to other locations, return this to more of a natural state that will help flood mitigation not only here but downstream,” Husted said, stressing that recurring flooding in the neighborhood is not sustainable.
