LANCASTER, Ohio — Authorities in Lancaster, Ohio, are searching for a person of interest following an alleged shooting in the 200 block of Woody Street.

Officers with the Lancaster Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at a residence located just west of downtown Lancaster, Ohio. Upon arrival, officers heard additional gunshots and observed a woman and two juveniles running from the home. Police safely escorted the three individuals away from the immediate area.

After carrying out a search inside the residence, officers confirmed that no one was inside the property. The department’s detective bureau is now investigating the scene and searching for 44-year-old Joseph Smith, who fled before police entered the home.

Lancaster Police Department Sgt. Ernie King stated that Smith is listed as a person of interest and is not officially designated as a suspect or considered a threat to the public. However, officials advise anyone who spots Smith not to approach him and to contact law enforcement immediately.

No injuries were reported in connection with the gunfire.

Police also asked residents and motorists to clear the area of Witte Street while officers respond to a separate active situation. Nearby Tallmadge Elementary School will open as scheduled.
