Marion County Mother Sentenced to 3 Years After Dog Attacks 6-Month-Old Baby to Death
A Marion County mother has been sentenced to three years in prison after her six-month-old baby was mauled to death by a dog earlier this year.
According to the Marion County Court of Common Pleas, Alyssa Smith received the maximum sentence for child endangerment following the April 2024 tragedy. Investigations revealed that Smith left her infant, baby Royal, unsupervised with another young child and her boyfriend’s Pitbull, which then fatally attacked the baby.
In a statement, Marion County Prosecutor Raymond Grogan said the sentencing reflects accountability for a heartbreaking act of neglect. “Smith’s disregard for the dog’s known aggressive behavior shows a pattern of irresponsibility that resulted in the death of her infant,” Grogan said.
Smith’s boyfriend, Blake Bates, has already pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection to the fatal attack and is awaiting sentencing.
Authorities emphasize that the case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of leaving children unattended with pets, especially those with a known violent history.
