The purchased real estate sits at 818 E. Main St., occupying the block between South 17th and South 18th streets on the south side of East Main Street and extending south to East Mound Street. The land is directly adjacent to the hospital‘s four-story Near East Office building, which opened in 2018 at 431 S. 18th St.

Turner Construction Company had previously leased the block for parking. Nationwide Children’s Hospital has not yet announced detailed development plans for the property, but a spokesperson indicated the purchase will allow the institution to thoughtfully plan for both short-term and long-term needs adjacent to its campus.

Historical records show the property was purchased by Smith Tandy Group in December 2012 for $575,000. It was also once owned by the Douglas Lula Foundation, an organization associated with Columbus native and former world heavyweight boxing champion James “Buster” Douglas. Nationwide Children’s Hospital already owns a smaller, one-third-acre parcel directly across South 17th Street, which it bought in 2012.

The East Main Street transaction adds to the hospital’s footprint as work continues on a massive expansion at its main campus located at 700 Children’s Drive. There, the hospital is constructing a 14-story, $1.27 billion acute-care tower scheduled to open in 2028. That building will house emergency services, surgical spaces, oncology care, a neonatal intensive care unit, and more than 430 beds.
