The federal funding will be paired with matching private investment to upgrade conductors and improve power flow across Ohio. According to state regulators, the technology deployment will add the equivalent of 5,820 megawatts of capacity to the electrical grid. By boosting the capacity of existing infrastructure, the project is designed to increase grid efficiency without requiring the construction of new power plants or additional transmission lines.

James Danly, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy, highlighted the practical benefits of upgrading current assets. He explained that enhancing conductors reduces power loss as electricity travels over long distances, allowing energy to reach wider geographic areas more effectively. Danly pointed to Ohio’s active economy and business growth as key reasons for the investment, noting that the upgrades will enhance system reliability and lower costs for energy users.

Jenifer French, chairperson of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, emphasized the importance of a resilient grid as Ohio and the nation focus on expanding domestic manufacturing and managing larger electrical loads.
