- Affected: Women veterans
Researchers at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, are launching a four-year study to investigate how menopause affects the mental and physical health of women military veterans.
The project is supported by a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense awarded to the OSU Wexner Medical Center and the Soder Women’s Health Research Program.
According to medical researchers, women who served in the military experience menopause on average about a decade earlier than civilians. This earlier onset can prolong exposure to health risks following menopause, including an increased likelihood of stroke, heart attack, and cognitive changes. During perimenopause—a transition period that can span several years before menopause is reached after 365 days without a menstrual period—women may also experience symptoms such as severe hot flashes, sleep disruptions, weight gain, anxiety, and depression.
To conduct the research, investigators are partnering with the Columbus VA to recruit up to 150 patients from its women’s clinic. Participants will be evaluated over an 18-month period.
The study will collect data on hormone levels, markers of inflammation, stress levels, and the microbiome. Dr. Tamar Gur, a professor of psychiatry at Ohio State University, emphasized that understanding biological changes during this transition is a key step toward developing targeted treatments. Gur is leading the research alongside Dr. Stephanie Gorka, who is also in the university’s Department of Psychiatry.
Organizers hope the findings will provide clear insight into why women veterans experience earlier menopause and lead to improved interventions for former service members.
