Universities across Ohio are launching a new online system to post undergraduate class syllabi publicly starting in the fall 2026 semester, satisfying requirements established under state law.

The transition comes as institutions comply with Senate Bill 1, which requires public online access to all undergraduate course syllabi in an accessible format. To meet the standard, several institutions, including Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, and Miami University, have partnered with the software company Simple Higher Ed to utilize its platform, Simple Syllabus.

The state legislation did not provide universities with state funding to build or maintain these public syllabus systems. According to contract documentation provided by Ohio State University, the institution entered a three-year agreement to integrate Simple Syllabus into its CarmenCanvas platform. The service costs the university $45,000 annually alongside an initial $10,000 implementation fee.

On its website, Ohio State University noted that the new tool enables instructors to quickly and easily create, duplicate, and deploy syllabi. However, some academic personnel have raised questions regarding the software’s practical necessity and financial burden.

Theresa Kulbaga, an English professor at Miami University and president of the Faculty Alliance of Miami, expressed doubt about student engagement with the public system, stating that students primarily rely on the syllabi physically distributed in class.

Kulbaga and other faculty members also voiced concerns over privacy and personal safety. Educators teaching subjects such as race, gender, and climate change fear that public exposure leaves them vulnerable to doxing, targeted harassment, and negative public backlash. Additionally, Kulbaga criticized the overall institutional spending on the software, arguing that the significant expenses fail to support the primary educational mission of universities.
