An orthopedic hand surgeon with OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio, has become the first physician in the state to perform a newly approved procedure designed to treat severe thumb arthritis.

Dr. Stephen Berling performed the operation on patient Julia Brown, who had experienced severe pain in both thumbs for two and a half years. The surgery treats thumb carpometacarpal arthritis, a condition that frequently impacts daily hand function.

The procedure functions similarly to a mini hip replacement for the thumb. During the operation, surgeons place a cup and a stem inside the metacarpal bone, providing immediate stability and mobility. Unlike older traditional methods that required removing bone, the new technique allows patients to retain stability and use their hand right away.

While the procedure has been utilized in Europe for 10 years, it received official approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last year. The outpatient surgery lasts about 45 minutes and does not require an overnight hospital stay.

In addition to being a quick procedure, the technique drastically reduces recovery time. Traditional surgical options for thumb arthritis generally require six to nine months of recovery, whereas patients undergoing this new method recover within six to nine weeks. Berling noted that the faster recovery helps preserve strength and allows patients to return to their daily routines without pain.

Brown underwent the procedure on her left thumb in July and described being completely pain-free following the operation. Due to the success of her first surgery, she is scheduled to have the procedure performed on her right thumb later this fall.
