US and Iran set for Ceasefire Talks

Negotiations between Iran and the US (United States) are preparing for high-level talks as a fragile ceasefire holds. Israel and Hezbollah continued exchanging fire on Friday, and Iran maintained control over the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Several unresolved issues threaten both the current truce and broader efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement.

Iranโ€™s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, which has close ties to the Revolutionary Guard, stated that planned talks on Saturday could be canceled unless Israel halts its military operations in Lebanon. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Iran for restricting maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route that once was used to transport 20% of global oil trade.

Kuwait also reported a drone attack on Thursday night, attributing it to Iran and allied militias. Although Iranโ€™s Revolutionary Guard denied involvement, it has previously conducted similar operations without claiming responsibility.

Despite these tensions, diplomatic efforts appear to be progressing. U.S. Vice President JD Vance is traveling to Pakistan ahead of the talks, expressing cautious optimism about the negotiations. He emphasized that the U.S. remains open to dialogue if Iran engages in good faith, while warning against attempts to undermine the process.

At the same time, separate negotiations between Israel and Lebanon are expected to begin next week in Washington. Israel has clarified that its ceasefire with Iran does not extend to Hezbollah, which has continued its involvement in the conflict.

Recent Israeli airstrikes in Beirut resulted in significant casualties, marking one of the deadliest days in Lebanon since the conflict began. In response, Trump urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to scale back military operations.

Iranian officials have warned that continued Israeli attacks on Hezbollah could trigger strong retaliation. Netanyahu, however, has indicated readiness to begin talks with Lebanon aimed at disarming Hezbollah and normalizing relations.

On the ground, Lebanese civilians are grappling with the aftermath of the violence, salvaging belongings from destroyed homes while mourning widespread losses.

Meanwhile, Iranโ€™s control of the Strait of Hormuz continues to disrupt global markets. Oil prices have surged sharply, with Brent crude rising more than 30% since the conflict began. Ship traffic through the strait has dropped dramatically, exacerbating economic uncertainty.

Energy officials warn that hundreds of oil tankers remain stalled, awaiting safe passage through the waterway. Trump has publicly criticized Iran for limiting access, accusing it of violating prior understandings.

Uncertainty also surrounds Iranโ€™s nuclear program, a central issue in the conflict. The United States and Israel aim to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes.

Iranian officials insist that preserving their right to enrich uranium is essential in any negotiations. Meanwhile, the human toll continues to rise, with thousands reported dead across Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and neighboring regions.
