Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as UK Prime Minister
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he will step down as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party after facing increasing opposition from within his own party.
The resignation follows a series of political setbacks, including significant losses in local elections, the departure of several government ministers, and mounting pressure from senior Labour Party figures who questioned his leadership.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said his decision was made in the best interests of both the country and the Labour Party.
โEvery decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision,โ Starmer said.
The outgoing prime minister acknowledged that confidence in his leadership had declined among Labour lawmakers.
โThe question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,โ he added.
Starmer to Remain Caretaker Prime Minister
Despite announcing his resignation, Starmer confirmed that he will continue serving as caretaker prime minister until the Labour Party selects a new leader.
He revealed that the partyโs National Executive Committee will establish a leadership election timetable, with nominations expected to open on July 9. The process is expected to conclude before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.
โI will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,โ Starmer said.
International Leaders React to Starmer’s Departure
Starmerโs resignation prompted reactions from political leaders across the globe.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised his leadership in a post on X, highlighting his contribution to European and Ukrainian security.
โIt can take many leaders years to grow into the statesman you became in just two years. European and Ukrainian security is stronger because of you. Thank you, dear Keir,โ she wrote.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the announcement through a post on Truth Social, criticizing Starmerโs record on immigration and energy policy while offering well wishes.
โKeir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects โ immigration and energy. I wish him well,โ Trump stated.
Labour Leadership Race Set to Begin
With Starmer preparing to leave office, attention now turns to the Labour Party leadership contest, which will determine both the partyโs future direction and the next prime minister of the United Kingdom.
The upcoming leadership race is expected to dominate British politics throughout the summer as Labour members choose a successor ahead of Parliamentโs return in September.
