USA Men Soccer Team Beats Japan 2-0 in Columbus Friendly at Lower.com Field

Columbus, Ohio – The United States Menโ€™s National Soccer Team (USMNT) showcased a dominant performance in downtown Columbus, Ohio, defeating Japan 2-0 in an international friendly at Lower.com Field on Tuesday night.

Led by manager Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S. squad used a strategic 3-5-2 formation to break a long-standing drought against top-tier FIFA-ranked opponents. With goals in both halves, the U.S. team delivered a classic โ€œDos a Ceroโ€ scoreline, a result beloved by American fans.

The USMNT remains a force in Columbus, now holding a 14-1 record in 15 matches played in the city and boasting a perfect 3-0 record at Lower.com Field. Tuesday nightโ€™s win marked the sixth 2-0 victory for the U.S. in Columbus history.

Local fans were thrilled as Columbus Crew defender Max Arfsten earned a starting spot, becoming the first Crew player to start for the national team in Columbus since Frankie Hejduk in 2009. Arfsten made an immediate impact, assisting the opening goal with a pinpoint cross to Alex Zendejas, who netted his second international goal with a slick finish in the 30th minute.

Folarin Balogun added the second goal in the 64th minute, capitalizing on a perfectly weighted through ball from Christian Pulisic and placing his shot into the far corner. Despite Japan fielding its second team, the U.S. controlled the tempo and created 12 shots in the first half alone.

This impressive showing in Columbus once again proves why it remains a fortress for the USMNT and why Lower.com Field continues to be one of the premier soccer venues in the U.S.

19-Year-Old Columbus Man Sentenced to 21 years for Hilltop Shooting

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for the fatal shooting in Columbusโ€™s Hilltop neighborhood that occurred in July 2024.

According to Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Shayla Favor, Mehki Miller pleaded guilty to several charges, including:

  • Murder
  • Felonious assault
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Having weapons under disability
  • Strangulation (from a separate case)

The charges stem from an incident on July 28, 2024, when officers from the Columbus Division of Police responded to a report of gunfire in the 700 block of South Ogden Avenue.

At the scene, police found 28-year-old John Wilks unresponsive with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m. A woman also suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to Grant Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.

Court records revealed that a physical altercation between Miller and Wilks escalated when Miller pulled a firearm from his waistband and shot Wilks at close range. As Wilks attempted to escape, Miller shot him again multiple times and later dragged his body to a detached garage before fleeing.

The circumstances surrounding how the woman was shot were not disclosed in court documents.

This case adds to the growing concern over youth violence and gun-related crimes in Columbus neighborhoods like Hilltop.

Columbus City Council Approves Millions for Affordable Housing and Small Business Growth

Columbus City Council Approves Millions for Affordable Housing and Small Business Growth

Columbus, Ohio โ€“ In a move to address housing challenges and revitalize underserved communities, Columbus City Council approved two major investments on Monday aimed at expanding affordable housing options and empowering local entrepreneurs on the city’s west and east sides.

One initiative allocates $1.2 million to Hilltop Rise, a nonprofit organization championing economic development in the Hilltop neighborhood. The funding will convert two vacant buildings on West Broad Street into vibrant mixed-use spaces , featuring nine affordable housing units above and six storefronts for small businesses on the ground level.

“This is about uplifting the community, not changing its identity,” said Danny Peterson, Executive Director of Hilltop Rise. โ€œWe are committed to being a resource hub for future business owners, providing the tools they need to thrive.โ€

City leaders, including Councilmember Nick Bankston, view this as a critical step in addressing economic disparities in historically overlooked neighborhoods.

โ€œColumbus is committed to investing in communities like the Hilltop, ensuring everyone shares in the city’s prosperity,โ€ Bankston stated.

East Side Project Adds 85 New Modular Affordable Apartments

The Council also greenlit a $2 million investment into a large-scale affordable housing development on Maryland Avenue on the east side of Columbus. This project will deliver 85 modular apartment units, including 12 three-bedroom apartments for families.

Utilizing modular construction, which allows housing units to be built off-site and assembled on location, will cut down on both time and costs, according to Bankston.

โ€œThese units come pre-permitted with electrical and plumbing in place. it is like assembling Legos. It’s efficient and cost-effective,โ€ he explained.

The total development cost is estimated at $29 million, funded through an affordable housing bond previously approved by voters. A new housing bond will appear on the November ballot, continuing Columbusโ€™s mission to combat housing insecurity.

Community Response and Long-Term Impact

Local residents see the developments as a hopeful sign. Robert Pardon, who lives next to the Hilltop site, emphasized the urgent need.

โ€œRent keeps going up. There are so many homeless people, this could make a real difference,โ€ he said.

These investments underscore Columbus’s strategy to foster equitable growth and ensure that long-neglected areas receive the resources they need to thrive.

The U.S. Menโ€™s National Soccer Team (USMNT) is set to reignite its winning spark in Columbus, Ohio. On Tuesday 9th September at 7:30 p.m., the USMNT faces Japan in a crucial pre-World Cup friendly at Lower.com Field, marking its first appearance in central Ohio in over three years.

This exhibition game is part of a series of friendlies designed to prepare the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Japan representing one of their most formidable non-CONCACAF opponents in recent memory.

Columbus: A Historic Stronghold for USMNT Success

Tuesday’s game is the 15th USMNT match in Columbus, a city that has earned legendary status in American soccer culture. The tradition began 25 years ago at Historic Crew Stadium, where the U.S. team famously dominated Mexico in a series of โ€œDos A Ceroโ€ victories.

Now at Lower.com Field, Columbus continues to be a place of U.S. dominance, with two World Cup qualifying wins already secured in the new venue. The matchup against Japan is historic in its own right, it marks the first time an Asian menโ€™s national team will play in Columbus.

Japan: Formidable Opposition Ahead of 2026

Japan enters the match ranked 17th in the world by FIFA and is currently on a five-game unbeaten streak, including a 0-0 draw against Mexico. With international stars like Wataru Endo (Liverpool), Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton), and Ayase Ueda (Feyenoord), Japan will provide a serious challenge for the Americans and a preview of the competition expected in 2026.

Columbus Candidates Appeal to Young Voters

Columbus, Ohio – As the November 2025 elections near, Columbus City Council and School Board candidates are increasingly focusing on younger voters, many of whom gathered at Fort Hayes Metropolitan Education Center for a youth-led political debate on Sunday.

The event, hosted by Columbus Stand Up, featured candidates for both local offices answering questions on pressing issues such as affordable housing, education reform, public safety, and transportation โ€” all from the perspective of a young, engaged audience.

โ€œIt is important for us as students to get involved,โ€ said Fort Hayes junior Yaretzi Lucero-Buitron. โ€œWe are going to be the ones living with these decisions.โ€

The debate was specifically designed to empower youth participation in local democracy. High school and college students not only attended โ€” they organized, promoted, and moderated the event. Karina Burck, a senior at Ohio State University, was one of the lead organizers and noted how turnout exceeded expectations.

โ€œI didnโ€™t expect so many under-25 attendees. It is proof young people care,โ€ Burck said.

Members of the activist group Black Men Build also attended, applauding the rise in youth political awareness. Organizer Carter Robinson called the event โ€œa crucial moment for getting young minds involved in shaping policy.โ€

The student voices though many not yet eligible to vote made a strong statement: they are watching, learning, and ready to lead.

Three members will be elected to the Columbus Board of Education, and one City Council seat is up for grabs.

  • Election Day: November 4, 2025
  • Voter Registration Deadline: October 6, 2025
  • Early & Mail-In Voting Begins: October 7, 2025

โ€œWe are the future of this city,โ€ said Burck. โ€œIt is time we act like it.โ€

Protesters Rally Outside Townhall in Short North After Former OSU Player’s Arrest for Domestic Violence

Columbus, OH โ€“ A small group of protesters gathered outside TownHallโ€™s Short North Arts District location Saturday evening in response to the arrest of Michael McCullough, a former Ohio State University football player, who was recently charged with felony strangulation involving an alleged domestic violence incident.

McCullough, 25, was arrested on Friday, sparking outrage across Columbus social media platforms. Activists and community members voiced concerns about his ties to Ethos Hospitality Group, which owns TownHall and other high-profile restaurants in Columbus and Cleveland.

Protesters Demand Accountability

Protester Megan Riley, a close friend of the alleged victim, said:

โ€œThe injuries I have seen are horrifying. I hope people in Columbus will stand up for victims and hold powerful people accountable.โ€

Flyers promoting the protest circulated widely online, with demonstrators calling out what they describe as a โ€œpattern of violent behaviorโ€ among individuals associated with Ethos Hospitality Group leadership.

Allegations Against Ethos Hospitality Owner

TownHall owner Bobby George is also facing serious criminal charges in Cleveland, including attempted murder and rape, according to protesters. Their message was clear: raise awareness and urge the community to boycott businesses connected to individuals accused of violent crimes.

Ethos Hospitality Group Responds

In a statement issued by Ethos Hospitality claimed they support the victim and denounced false information being spread online. They also addressed the arrest of Jacob Haller, who allegedly led the protest and is now facing charges for harassment and threats against Mr. George and other employees.

The company accused Haller of escalating to criminal behavior, including throwing a brick through a window at Georgeโ€™s residence and publicly targeting female employees.

โ€œTownHall condemns all forms of domestic violence,โ€ the statement read. โ€œWe have supported the victim and will continue to do so.โ€

A civil stalking protection order was granted against Haller, and Columbus Police are continuing their investigation.

Legal Proceedings Continue

A preliminary court hearing for Michael McCullough has been scheduled for September 9, 2025. No further public statements have been made by TownHall regarding the situation.

Somali Community Leader Omar Jamal Detained by ICE in Minnesota

Somali-American community leader Omar Jamal was arrested in Minneapolis on Friday 29th August by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed.

According to DHS, Jamalโ€™s criminal history includes assault, fraud-related charges, and a restraining order from his family. Records also indicate that he was issued a final deportation order back in 2011, though it was not enforced at the time.

Currently held at Freeborn County Jail in Albert Lea, Minnesota, Jamal is being represented by attorney Abdiqani Jabane, who stressed that Jamal has dedicated decades to advocating for Minnesotaโ€™s Somali-American community. Jabane said they are pursuing all legal remedies to protect his rights and secure his release.

Jamal joined the Ramsey County Sheriffโ€™s Office in 2020 as a Community Service Officer, where he has been praised for strengthening ties between law enforcement and Minnesotaโ€™s Somali population, the largest in the United States. Officials highlighted his important role in improving community relations.

His arrest has drawn widespread attention, raising questions about immigration enforcement, community leadership, and the future of Somali-American advocacy in Minnesota.

Major Deadline Looms for Ohio Colleges Under Senate Bill 1 Reforms

Major Deadline Looms for Ohio Colleges Under Senate Bill 1 Reforms

Public colleges and universities across Ohio are facing a Sept. 25 deadline to comply with Senate Bill 1, also known as the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act. The sweeping reform law requires schools to phase out diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs and eliminate degree tracks with persistently low graduation rates.

Several institutions have already begun compliance measures. Ohio University suspended admissions to 11 low-enrollment programs in August. Kent State University is expected to release its program list following a Sept. 17 board meeting. Meanwhile, The Ohio State University has yet to announce its decisions but confirmed that deans and academic leaders are reviewing options for restructuring or discontinuing certain degrees.

Ohio State pledged that current students enrolled in any degree program slated for elimination will still be able to graduate. The university also announced it will conduct annual reviews of degree enrollments.

Faculty groups have voiced concerns about the lawโ€™s implications. The Ohio State chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) argues that the reforms represent political interference in academic freedom. โ€œSenate Bill 1 is about curtailing academic freedoms both for students and professors,โ€ said Dr. Pranav Jani, associate professor of English and AAUP-Ohio State board member.

Beyond program changes, Senate Bill 1 introduces new graduation requirements. Future Bachelor of Arts students must complete a civic literacy course, including readings from the U.S. Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, and works by economist Adam Smith. The law also extends to student life, banning sidewalk chalk for free expression and limiting dormitory decorations to school-themed items only, excluding pop culture or personal displays.

As the Sept. 25 deadline approaches, Ohioโ€™s higher education community โ€” students, faculty, and administrators โ€” is bracing for significant changes that could reshape the academic and cultural landscape of campuses statewide.
