Senator Bernie Moreno Claims Former Senator Sherrod Brown Left Him With a “Mess”

U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) recently expressed frustration with his predecessor, former Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), claiming that Brown left behind a “mess” for him to handle. Speaking at a public event in Tuscarawas County on Saturday, where he endorsed Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, Moreno shared that Brown failed to contact him, never conceded the election, and closed all of his offices, leaving many issues unresolved.

Moreno, who defeated the longtime senator in one of the most expensive Senate races in U.S. history, called this visit his first public appearance in Ohio since his January swearing-in. With Ohio set to vote for both a governor and senator in 2026, speculation about Brown’s political future continues, though he has not yet confirmed or denied his candidacy for either race.

In response to Moreno’s comments, Brown recently launched the Dignity of Work Institute, an economic think tank aimed at addressing the current state of the U.S. economy and influencing policy change. Brown responded to Moreno’s criticism by highlighting the quality of constituent services his office provided during his tenure, noting that Ohioans have consistently praised the outreach efforts.

Both Senator Moreno and Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) have faced an increase in communication from Ohioans. Many constituents have voiced frustration about full voicemail inboxes and delayed responses, with some highlighting challenges in scheduling meetings with their representatives. While a spokesperson for Moreno’s office explained that Brown’s closure of constituent cases was not related to the surge in communication, the increased volume of requests is affecting offices across the U.S.

Carrie Hartman, President of the Toledo City Council, recently shared her frustrations about the lack of timely responses from Ohio’s senators. Hartman noted that while Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) promptly scheduled a meeting to discuss Toledo’s concerns, both of Ohio’s senators were difficult to reach. Despite this, Hartman did acknowledge past successes with Senator Brown’s office, including securing funding for local projects like the Coast Guard training center in Toledo.
