Reynoldsburg City Schools Faces Job Cuts and Budget Reductions Following Levy Failure

Columbus, OHReynoldsburg Schools in Columbus, Ohio are preparing for significant job cuts as the district faces a budget shortfall exceeding $8.3 million. This week, 51 teachers were officially notified that their positions are being eliminated due to approved spending reductions aimed at addressing the financial crisis.

The decision comes after voters rejected a critical school levy in November. According to the school district, the Board of Education and administration collaborated over the winter to identify solutions to the growing deficit. The board formally approved the cuts in February.

In addition to teacher layoffs, Reynoldsburg Schools will cut five of its seven social workers and five of its nine elementary assistant principals. The district is also reducing class and program offerings, postponing building maintenance, modifying security protocols, and redrawing school boundaries to manage overcrowding and optimize transportation routes.

Starting in the 2025โ€“2026 school year, families will also see higher pay-to-play athletic fees, increasing to $400 for junior high and $500 for high school sports.

The failed five-year, 6.65-mill levyโ€”defeated by a 55% to 45% marginโ€”has forced the district to take immediate action. No levy has been placed on the upcoming May 6 ballot.

As one of several Central Ohio school districts impacted by failed levies, Reynoldsburg Schools is now navigating tough changes that will affect students, staff, and the broader community.

Columbus, OH – Easter Sunday is quickly approaching in 2025, falling on April 20th, a time when families across Columbus, Ohio gather to celebrate this significant Christian holiday. Whether you are planning to attend church services, participate in a community egg hunt, or simply enjoy time with loved ones, knowing the details ahead of time is key.

But did you know Easterโ€™s date shifts each year? Itโ€™s not fixed like Christmas. Thatโ€™s because it follows the ecclesiastical lunar calendar, not our usual solar one.

When Is Easter Sunday 2025?

Mark your calendar: Easter Sunday lands on April 20, 2025. This year, Easter aligns with Orthodox Easter, making it a globally unified celebration. The date changes each year, always falling on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

When Is Good Friday 2025?

Good Friday will be observed on April 18, 2025. This solemn day remembers the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is often marked with prayer services and reflection.

Why Does Easter Change Every Year?

Hereโ€™s a quick explanation:

  • Easter follows the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox (March 21).
  • This differs from the astronomical full moon or equinox, leading to date shifts each year.
  • The ecclesiastical calendar is based on 29- or 30-day lunar months rather than our standard months.

Confused? Donโ€™t worryโ€”just know that Easter is always celebrated on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

Whatโ€™s Open and Closed on Easter in Columbus?

Most government offices, banks, and postal services will remain closed on Easter Sunday, as it’s a weekend. However, hours for local restaurants, retail stores, and entertainment venues in Columbus may vary. Happy Easter!

Farewell to Mara: Beloved Amur Tiger at Columbus Zoo Passes Away After 15 Years

Columbus, OH – Mara, the cherished Amur tiger who became a symbol of resilience and conservation at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, has passed away at the age of 18. The zoo announced the difficult decision to euthanize Mara due to declining health and age-related mobility issues that impacted her quality of life.

Born in 2006 at the Pittsburgh Zoo, Mara joined the Columbus Zoo in 2010, quickly becoming a guest favorite thanks to her playful and mischievous personality. She was known to enjoy the scent of cinnamon and luxury perfumes, often seen carrying around paper bags or playfully stealing boxes from her cubs.

In 2012, Mara made headlines by giving birth to the first litter of Amur tiger cubs at the Columbus Zoo in over 25 yearsโ€”a milestone that marked a significant contribution to endangered species conservation. Over the years, she proudly raised a total of nine cubs: Dimitri, Wiz, Morgana, Glinda, Taj II, Ursula, Timothy, George Miller, and Mabelle. Mara was deeply protective and nurturing, embodying the spirit of motherhood in the animal kingdom.

Zoo officials honored Mara as a passionate ambassador for Amur tiger conservation. โ€œHer legacy lives on not only through her cubs but also through the awareness she brought to the plight of Siberian tigers in the wild,โ€ the zoo shared.

Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, are one of the most endangered big cats in the world, with fewer than 600 remaining in the wild. Native to the snow-covered forests of eastern Russia and northern China, they face serious threats from poaching, habitat destruction, and political instability.

Maraโ€™s story is a reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation and the vital role zoos play in protecting endangered species. Her memory continues to inspire zoo staff, conservationists, and visitors from around the world.

Columbus Doctor Shares Shocking Firsthand Experience from Gaza Crisis

Columbus, OH โ€“A Columbus doctor is drawing attention to a worsening humanitarian emergency in the Middle East after returning from a medical mission in the conflict zone. Dr. Nick Maynard, a gastrointestinal surgeon trained at Oxford and now based in Ohio, shared powerful firsthand accounts of working in Gaza hospitals during a recent event at the Columbus Mennonite Church.

Since 2010, Maynard has traveled frequently to the region, working alongside local physicians to deliver surgical care under life-threatening conditions. His latest visits followed the October 2023 outbreak of Gaza war, and he described scenes of destruction, severe trauma cases, and an overwhelmed healthcare system struggling without basic resources.

โ€œFrom the moment we arrived, the sound of drones never stopped,โ€ Maynard told the audience of nearly 100 attendees. โ€œWe operated with no gloves, no medicine, and no anesthesia.โ€

In one of the most heart-wrenching cases, he described two injured children lying on the floor of a hospital while emergency surgery was underway just feet away. Only one child survived.

Maynard said the hospitals he worked in were frequently targeted by airstrikes, and that many of his colleagues have been abducted, tortured, or killed. He reported that over 1,000 medical professionals have died during the conflict, with hundreds more imprisoned. โ€œThis is no accident,โ€ he emphasized. โ€œThese are deliberate acts.โ€

Originally scheduled to speak at the Ohio State University Global Health Symposium, Maynardโ€™s keynote was canceled due to campus tensions. Another scheduled event at the Ohio History Connection was also pulled. Determined to share the reality he witnessed, local organizers at Columbus Mennonite Church stepped in.

โ€œThis is about basic human dignity,โ€ said Pastor Joel Miller. โ€œWe must amplify these stories.โ€

Many attendees expressed shock and gratitude. Akshay Garesh, a medical student at OSU, said he thought he understood the headlines, but hearing a firsthand perspective made the situation real.

โ€œThe suffering goes beyond statistics,โ€ he said. โ€œYou see the people behind the numbers.โ€

Maynard also underscored the growing mental health crisis in the region, especially among children. Nearly a million young people are estimated to require psychological care for trauma, anxiety, and depression brought on by the conflict.

His message to the Columbus community was clear: citizens have the power to speak up, support humanitarian efforts, and hold leaders accountable. โ€œThese are people with families, dreams, and futures,โ€ he said. โ€œThey need our voices.โ€

Security Protocol Dispute at Ridgeview Middle School: Police vs. School Officials

Columbus, OH – A Security Protocol Dispute at Ridgeview Middle School in Columbus, Ohio, captured the public’s attention after a bomb threat led to a tense interaction between school officials and police officers. The incident, which escalated when police were asked to wait for a security escort, has sparked a broader conversation about the balance between school security protocols and law enforcement response during emergency situations.

Columbus police responded to a security protocol dispute at Ridgeview Middle School after a student made a bomb threat, later admitting it was due to frustration over a classroom reassignment. While the threat was not considered serious, the response from school officials, led by Principal Natalie James, highlighted the complexities of managing security in schools.

Key Points of the Incident:

  • Security Protocols: School leadership insisted on following district policies, which require police to wait for an escort unless the situation is a direct emergency, like an active shooter.
  • Miscommunication: The security protocol dispute at Ridgeview Middle School was marked by tension, with officers expressing frustration over the delays and school officials defending their procedures.
  • Clarification of the Threat: The bomb threat was deemed a non-issue, originating from a studentโ€™s anger about being moved to a different classroom, and no further legal action was taken.

This confrontation at Ridgeview Middle School raises important questions about how schools handle security threats and whether the protocols in place are adequate in managing such situations while respecting the roles of law enforcement.

Ohio State F-1 Visa Revocation: Two More International Students Affected

Ohio State F-1 Visa Revocation: Two More International Students Affected

Columbus, OH – At least two additional international students at The Ohio State University have had their F-1 visas revoked, bringing the total number of students impacted by Ohio State F-1 visa revocation to seven, according to a university spokesperson.

The spokesperson did not provide further details on why these visas were revoked. Last week, the spokesperson mentioned there was no clear explanation for the decision. The F-1 visa is a vital document for international students wishing to study in the United States.

Impact of Ohio State F-1 Visa Revocation

International students who have had their F-1 visas revoked are being ordered by the Department of Homeland Security to leave the U.S. immediately. This represents a significant change from the previous practice where students could typically finish their studies before leaving.

Some of the reasons behind the revocation of F-1 visas include involvement in pro-Palestinian protests and minor infractions such as traffic violations. Others affected by the Ohio State F-1 visa revocation are left unsure of why their status has been altered.

Nationwide Implications for Foreign Students

The Ohio State F-1 visa revocation incident is part of a broader pattern that is affecting international students across the U.S. Other universities, including Minnesota State University in Mankato, have also experienced similar revocations. President Edward Inch of Mankato stated that five international students had their visas revoked for reasons that are still unclear.

Across the country, universities from Arizona State University, Cornell, North Carolina State University, and others are dealing with similar visa issues. Some students have voluntarily left the country, while others, including those from Tufts University and the University of Alabama, have been detained by immigration authorities.

Whatโ€™s Next for International Students?

Many higher education officials are concerned that the increasing number of Ohio State F-1 visa revocation cases will discourage future international students from applying to U.S. universities. The shift in policy also raises fears that students might be discouraged from pursuing academic opportunities in the U.S.

As this story continues to unfold, universities across the nation are urging international students to keep up to date with changes in their visa status and seek advice if their F-1 visa has been affected.
