Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Libya: Strengthening Ties & Addressing Key Regional Issues

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Tripoli, Libya, on Sunday for a high-level diplomatic visit aimed at deepening bilateral relations between the two nations.

Upon arrival, senior Libyan officials extended a warm welcome, highlighting the enduring partnership between Somalia and Libya. The visit underscores both countriesโ€™ commitment to fostering stronger political and economic cooperation.

During his stay, President Mohamud is scheduled to meet with Libyan Presidential Council President Mohamed Yunus Al-Menfi. Their discussions are expected to cover key regional developments, security collaboration, political alliances, anti-trafficking initiatives, and the urgent repatriation of Somali detainees facing harsh conditions in Libyan prisons.

The Somali government, working alongside the International Organization for Migration (IOM), recently facilitated the rescue and safe return of hundreds of Somali migrants trapped in trafficking networks.

Libya has remained a critical transit hub for African and Middle Eastern migrants seeking passage to Europe, often fleeing conflict and economic instability. Since 2014, the countryโ€™s migration crisis has intensified, making international cooperation crucial in addressing the humanitarian challenges.

Ahmed Moalim Fiqi Denies Blocking Mohamed Hussein Robleโ€™s Diplomatic Passport Clearance

Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somaliaโ€™s Foreign Minister, has denied reports that the federal government obstructed Mohamed Hussein Roble, the former Prime Minister, from obtaining diplomatic passport clearance for his trip to South Africa.

In an interview with VOA Somalia, Minister Fiqi clarified that the government holds Roble in high regard, acknowledging his role in overseeing Somaliaโ€™s 2022 elections under former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.

โ€œWe officially communicated with him and his delegation on February 1, and there is no record of his request being denied. The first we heard of this claim was on social media. Furthermore, Roble himself has not publicly stated that his request was rejected. Should he raise the issue, the government will address it directly,โ€ said Minister Fiqi.

The controversy emerged after reports circulated online alleging that the Somali Embassy in Kenya had denied Robleโ€™s passport clearance. However, despite these claims, the former prime minister successfully traveled to South Africa on Thursday, using his Swedish passportโ€”a privilege granted through his naturalized citizenship.

Robleโ€™s visit comes at the invitation of the Somali diaspora in South Africa, where he is expected to address key political challenges facing Somalia. His trip coincides with rising tensions in Mogadishu over electoral disputes and constitutional reforms, which have intensified political rivalries.

This development highlights the ongoing power dynamics within Somaliaโ€™s leadership and underscores the broader implications of diplomatic travel access in the countryโ€™s evolving political landscape.

Somalia Reinforces Efforts to Save Citizens on Death Row in Saudi Arabia

The Somali government is actively working to protect Somali prisoners in Saudi Arabia following widespread protests in Mogadishu by families of detainees facing execution.

In an official statement, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to securing legal representation and safeguarding the rights of Somali nationals abroad. Officials are in discussions with Saudi authorities to facilitate the transfer of Somali detainees to serve their sentences in Somalia under the Riyadh Agreement on International Judicial Cooperation, which governs prisoner transfers among Arab League member states.

Calls for Action After Execution of Somali Citizen

Public pressure has mounted after the execution of Somali national Mohamed Nur Hussein Jaโ€™al, who was convicted of drug smuggling. His family claims he was denied a fair trial, lacked legal representation, and was not given the chance to appeal his sentence. Protesters report that at least 45 Somali nationals are currently on death row in Saudi prisons, urging the government to intervene and prevent further executions.

Somaliaโ€™s Diplomatic Push for Justice

Justice Minister Hassan Moalim Mohamud emphasized the governmentโ€™s commitment to ensuring fair treatment for Somali citizens under Saudi law. Ongoing diplomatic discussions aim to resolve these cases through legal and humanitarian channels.

The Ministry of Justice assured the public that it will continue to provide updates on its efforts, reinforcing Somaliaโ€™s dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of its citizens worldwide.

Mohamed Hussein Roble denied a diplomatic passport by Somalia, travels to South Africa on Swedish citizenship amid rising political tensions.

Mohamed Hussein Roble Denied Diplomatic Passport โ€“ Political Tensions in Somalia!

Former Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Thursday after the Somali government reportedly blocked him from obtaining diplomatic passport clearance. The move has sparked controversy, with critics questioning whether it signals escalating political tensions in Mogadishu.

Roble, who landed at O.R. Tambo International Airport, traveled using his Swedish passport, which he holds as a naturalized citizen. He was accompanied by key political figures, including former Minister of Education Abdullahi Arab, former State Minister for Planning Gaani, and former Banadir regional secretary-general Xiireey. All members of the delegation used European passports, further highlighting the Somali governmentโ€™s refusal to grant diplomatic travel privileges.

Despite mounting criticism on social media, Somaliaโ€™s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued an official statement regarding the decision. Political analysts and opposition leaders argue that barring a former prime minister from diplomatic travel is an unprecedented move, potentially reflecting deepening divisions within Somaliaโ€™s leadership.

Robleโ€™s visit to South Africa follows an invitation from the Somali diaspora, where he is expected to discuss Somaliaโ€™s ongoing political challenges, including electoral disputes and constitutional reforms. His trip comes amid rising political uncertainty in Mogadishu, with growing concerns over selective bureaucratic measures being used to sideline political figures.

Public backlash against the Somali government continues to grow, with many calling for transparency over the decision. As tensions escalate, all eyes remain on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an official response.

Hassan: The Mysterious Somali Merchant Who Aided Mau Mau Fighters

0
Hassan, a Somali trader who secretly funded the Mau Mau fighters, defying colonial rule in Kenyaโ€™s independence struggle.
The forgotten story of Hassanโ€”the Somali trader who risked everything to support the Mau Mau rebellion against British rule

Hassan and the Mau Mau – The Secret Ally Who Challenged Colonial Rule

The Mau Mau rebellion remains one of the most defining moments in Kenyaโ€™s fight for independence. While the contributions of the Kikuyu, Embu, and Meru communities are widely acknowledged, less is known about other allies of the movement. One such unsung hero is Hassan, a Somali trader whose support for the cause remains largely overlooked. His story is deeply intertwined with the confiscation of freedom fightersโ€™ properties, the influence of loyalists, and the prolonged struggle for justice that persisted even after independence.

A Merchant in the Heart of the Independence Struggle

Hassanโ€™s shop, once a thriving commercial hub, became a pivotal meeting point for Mau Mau fighters. Located in Juja along Thika Road, it was more than just a retail outletโ€”it played a strategic role in the fight against colonial rule. The complex was well-equipped, offering restaurant and butchery services, as well as a petrol pump. What set it apart was its three distinct entrances, catering separately to European settlers, Asians and Arabs, and Africans.

As the Mau Mau movement gained momentum in the 1940s and 1950s, Hassanโ€™s shop evolved into a vital rest stop for fighters heading to the forests. Former Juja MP and Mau Mau veteran Gitu Kahengeri recalls, โ€œIt was a well-known stopover for travelers on Thika Road. I personally knew Hassan. He was targeted by the colonial government for supporting Mau Mau.โ€

Property Seizures and Freedom Fightersโ€™ Losses

The colonial crackdown on Mau Mau was relentless, and numerous freedom fighters were detained. This allowed loyalists and opportunistic traders to seize the properties of those arrested. Despite Hassanโ€™s significant contributions to the independence movement, he was not spared from this wave of property confiscation.

His family recalls how he spent his later years trying to reclaim his properties, a battle he ultimately lost. โ€œWeโ€™re uncertain whether we still own it. But my mother always said that the shop remained exactly as my father left it,โ€ says Ms. Mohammed, Hassanโ€™s daughter.

In 1969, long after Kenya gained independence, Hassan wrote to President Jomo Kenyatta, pleading for justice. In his letter, he urged the government to direct East African Bag and Cordage to return his confiscated property. However, his plea went unanswered, and Hassan passed away, possibly feeling disillusioned after his sacrifices went unrecognized.

The Somali Communityโ€™s Role in the Independence Movement

Hassanโ€™s story also sheds light on the often-overlooked role of the Somali community in Kenyaโ€™s liberation. While the Mau Mau struggle is primarily associated with the Kikuyu, Embu, and Meru communities, many Somalis played crucial roles by offering financial support, gathering intelligence, or even actively participating in the fight. Hassan was one such figure who risked everything, yet his contributions remain largely unacknowledged.

A Call to Preserve History

As Kenya continues to reflect on its journey to independence, the tale of Hassan and his neglected shop should serve as a reminder of the diverse contributions to the countryโ€™s freedom. Recognizing the sacrifices made by all communities, including the Somalis, is essential in painting a complete and truthful picture of the nationโ€™s past.

It is time to reclaim and honor the stories of figures like Hassan. His shop may now be in ruins, but his role in Kenyaโ€™s independence struggle should never fade into obscurity. Perhaps, one day, justice will reach those who gave everything for a free Kenya, even if they did not live to see the rewards of their sacrifices.
