Columbus Woman Sentenced to Life in Prison for Role in Death of 8-Year-Old Boy

Columbus, Ohio – A tragic Columbus case has reached a milestone in court. Johnna Lowe, the girlfriend of LaShanda Wilder, has been sentenced to life in prison for her involvement in the 2024 death of 8-year-old Martonio Wilder. The sentencing took place at the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, where Lowe pleaded guilty to one count of murder and one count of abuse of a corpse.

Originally facing additional charges of endangering children, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence, those charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

The investigation began when Wilder reported her son missing. Police later discovered Martonioโ€™s body concealed in the attic of their Columbus home. The Franklin County Coroner determined the cause of death to be abuse and malnutrition.

Lowe and Wilder turned themselves in the following day. Lowe has been sentenced to life with the possibility of parole after 15 years and received 342 days of jail-time credit. Wilder is scheduled to appear in court on July 15.

This heartbreaking case has gripped Columbus and continues to raise awareness about child abuse and community safety.

Five people were hospitalized Thursday evening following a serious car accident in West Jefferson, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred around 6:25 p.m. when a vehicle veered off Park West Drive, just off U.S. Route 40, and plunged into a retention pond near a local warehouse.

One additional person was pulled from the submerged vehicle. Three individuals were taken to Nationwide Childrenโ€™s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while two others, reportedly in cardiac arrest, were transported to Doctors Hospital. Their current conditions remain unknown.

Emergency teams from multiple local departments โ€” including OSHP West Jefferson Post, West Jefferson Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Township Fire and EMS, and Prairie Township Fire Department โ€” collaborated in the rescue effort.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Ohio Democratic Lawmakers Introduce LGBTQ+ Rights Bills Amid Pride Month Debates

Columbus, Ohio – Democratic legislators at the Ohio Statehouse unveiled a comprehensive package of LGBTQ+ rights bills on Tuesday, aiming to protect the civil liberties of LGBTQ+ residents across the state. Announced during Pride Month, the bills seek to ban conversion therapy, secure marriage equality, and uphold basic civil rights for LGBTQ+ Ohioans.

State Senator Nickie Antonio emphasized the historic struggles of the LGBTQ+ community, stating, โ€œWe are not going back to those days of erasure and persecution.โ€ The proposed legislation is intended as a counter to recent Republican-backed bills, such as the controversial SAFE Act, which bans gender-affirming healthcare for minors, and another bill restricting restroom access for transgender students.

Representative Eric Synenberg stressed the importance of acknowledging the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals: โ€œThousands of Ohioans deserve to have their rights respected and protected.โ€

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers and faith leaders held a separate prayer event at the Statehouse, organized by Rep. Gary Clickโ€”sponsor of the SAFE Act. Click maintained that the legislation is about empowering parents, not advancing a cultural agenda.

So far, the Democratic bills have no Republican co-sponsors, signaling a deep partisan divide on LGBTQ+ rights in Ohio.

As Columbus and the rest of Ohio continue Pride Month celebrations, the debate over civil rights and legislative policy remains front and center.

Columbus City Council Expands Renter Protections with New Housing Stability Measures

Columbus officials address housing issues with new legislation supporting tenants

Columbus City Council Expands Renter Protections with New Housing Stability Measures

Columbus, Ohio – As Columbus continues to grow, housing affordability remains a key concern. On Monday night, the Columbus City Council passed two major ordinances to expand renter protections and strengthen housing support services across the city.

โ€œThese are crucial pieces of legislation,โ€ said Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin. โ€œWith rising rents and increased displacement, we are committed to supporting our most vulnerable residents.โ€

One of the new ordinances includes the approval of $1.06 million in Emergency Rental Assistance Funds, aimed at helping low-income renters avoid eviction and homelessness. Since 2021, Columbus has invested more than $90 million into this program, helping over 31,000 tenants remain in stable housing.

In addition, the city created a new Division of Housing Stability within the Department of Development. This division will centralize all tenant-focused policies, including protections against source-of-income discrimination, property wholesaling regulations, and landlord registry systems.

Michael Stevens, Director of the Department of Development, emphasized the importance of these efforts: โ€œToo many residents have faced exploitation. These protections are essential to creating a fair and just housing system.โ€

Both initiatives are part of the Councilโ€™s ongoing Housing for All legislation, launched in March 2023, with the goal of creating long-term housing solutions for every Columbus resident.

Ohio Launches Digital Liquor License System, Transforming How 28,000+ Businesses Manage Permits

Columbus, Ohio – Beginning Wednesday, June 4, the Ohio Division of Liquor Control will fully transition to a digital platform for managing liquor permits across the state. The new Ohio Permit and Licensing (OPAL) system is a game-changer, providing an all-online process for more than 28,000 businessesโ€”including bars, restaurants, breweries, and distributorsโ€”as well as thousands of nonprofits that apply for temporary alcohol permits, especially in summer.

With OPAL, license holders can now apply, renew, transfer, and manage liquor permits online with 24/7 access. The state says this move will improve efficiency, transparency, and ease of access. After June 4, paper applications will no longer be accepted, making digital submissions mandatory.

As a Columbus-based media company, we are closely following this state-level development that affects businesses statewide. Stay updated with our local reporting on policy changes, regulatory tech rollouts, and Ohioโ€™s evolving business landscape.
