Why Is Tulsi Gabbard Stepping Down as Director of National Intelligence?
In an announcement dated May 22, 2026, Tulsi Gabbard wrote to President Donald Trump that she would be stepping down from her position as Director of National Intelligence (DNI). The resignation letter, addressed directly to the president, provides a personal and emotional explanation for her decision and sheds light on the circumstances behind her departure.
Why Is Tulsi Gabbard Stepping Down?
According to the resignation letter submitted to President Trump, Tulsi Gabbard is stepping down primarily due to a serious family health crisis involving her husband, Abraham.
In the letter, Gabbard states that her husband was recently diagnosed with an “extremely rare form of bone cancer” and is facing significant medical challenges in the months ahead. She explained that the diagnosis requires her full attention and support, making it impossible for her to continue fulfilling the demanding responsibilities of leading the Office of the Director of National Intelligence while also being present for her family.
Gabbard wrote that she could not, “in good conscience,” ask her husband to face the difficult battle alone while she remained committed to a position that requires extensive time and focus.
Gabbard Says the ODNI Has Made Progress
Despite her resignation, Gabbard highlighted what she described as significant accomplishments during her tenure as Director of National Intelligence.
In the letter, she noted that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) had made meaningful progress in:
- Advancing transparency within the intelligence community.
- Addressing and uncovering misconduct.
- Restoring integrity and public trust.
- Strengthening accountability across intelligence agencies.
While acknowledging that important work remains unfinished, Gabbard expressed confidence that her team and the administration would continue the mission without disruption.
