Ohio Hemp Businesses Could Close if Senate Bill 86 Passes

Ohio Hemp Businesses Could Close if Senate Bill 86 Passes

Columbus, Ohio – As Ohio legislators move forward with Senate Bill 86, hemp business owners across the state are voicing serious concerns. If passed, the bill could force hemp-derived products off the shelves of gas stations, convenience stores, and smoke shops, requiring them to be sold exclusively in licensed marijuana dispensaries.

Currently, hemp is legal under both federal and Ohio law, but this bill could redefine how and where hemp products are accessed โ€” and that has the industry on edge.

Ahmad Khalio, operator of the Hippie Hut Smoke Shops in Columbus, said the legislation would be devastating to his business.

โ€œHemp takes up about 40% of our margins. If these bills go through, weโ€™ve already told employees layoffs are likely,โ€ Khalio shared.

The bill stems from concerns raised by Governor Mike DeWine, who has expressed a desire to ban the sale of โ€œintoxicating hempโ€ in locations accessible to minors.

โ€œYou have got young kids walking into gas stations and buying this garbage,โ€ DeWine said. โ€œThe legislature needs to take action.โ€

Although a similar bill failed to pass in last year’s General Assembly, Senate Bill 86 passed unanimously in the Senate just two weeks ago. It was referred to the General Government Committee in the Ohio House on May 7, and its progress is being closely watched.

If passed, the Ohio Department of Commerce will be responsible for establishing new rules on licensing, packaging, labeling, and advertising for hemp products โ€” all of which could significantly affect how small businesses operate.

Not all lawmakers support an outright ban. Republican State Rep. Bill Seitz advocated for balanced regulation over prohibition.

โ€œWe can regulate these products without banning them entirely. Many stores are making a decent living from hemp sales,โ€ he said.

But as uncertainty builds, many local retailers fear the worst. Khalio emphasized that Ohio hemp businesses could close if Senate Bill 86 passes, and that would mean lost jobs, lost revenue, and less access for consumers.

As the bill moves through the House, business owners, employees, and community advocates continue to push for fair regulations that allow the hemp industry to survive โ€” and thrive in Ohio.

Vivek Ramaswamy Secures Ohio GOP Endorsement for 2026 Governor Race

Vivek Ramaswamy Secures Ohio GOP Endorsement for 2026 Governor Race

Columbus, Ohio Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech billionaire and former presidential candidate, has officially secured the Ohio Republican Party’s endorsement for the 2026 governorโ€™s race. His candidacy, heavily backed by President Donald Trump and boosted by a timely social media post from Donald Trump Jr., has now gained momentum as he positions himself as a frontrunner.

The Ohio GOPโ€™s State Central Committee made the decision in a closed-door session, stirring controversy among some members who felt the early endorsement was premature. Despite this, the vote favored Ramaswamy over veteran state figures like Attorney General Dave Yost and Appalachian business leader Heather Hill.

Lara Trump, former co-chair of the Republican National Committee, opened the meeting with a call to unity, aligning with the partyโ€™s 2026 slogan: โ€œUnite, unite, unite!โ€

Notably, Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel, a former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach, hinted at a possible bid just hours before the endorsement, introducing a new dynamic into the already competitive Republican field.

On the Democratic side, Dr. Amy Acton, known for her leadership during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, is the only declared candidate so far.

Ramaswamy launched his campaign in February and has been making statewide appearances ever since. Trumpโ€™s endorsement branded him as โ€œYoung, Strong, and Smart,โ€ giving his campaign a powerful push.

The endorsement could alter the raceโ€™s dynamics, as traditional Ohio politics often favor candidates with governmental experience. However, Ramaswamy appears to be following in the footsteps of political newcomers like J.D. Vance and Bernie Moreno, both of whom used Trumpโ€™s backing to rise swiftly.

Yostโ€™s campaign, while respectful of the decision, emphasized that Ohioans deserve a true electoral choice rather than what they termed a โ€œpremature coronation.โ€

Grandmother Mourns 6-Year-Old Eva Bretz – her mother faces murder charges

Columbus, Ohio โ€“ A heartbreaking tragedy has left the community grieving after 6-year-old Eva Bretz died under disturbing circumstances. Grandmother Darcy Bretz mourns the loss of her beloved granddaughter as the childโ€™s mother, Ashley Fagan, faces murder charges.

Eva was a vibrant, artistic girl who loved drawing, dancing, and performing. Her grandmother recalls the special bond they shared, saying, โ€œI called her my angel from the moment I met her.โ€ Most weekends were spent at Darcyโ€™s home, where Eva found joy, safety, and creativity.

On April 13, Eva was taken to Nationwide Childrenโ€™s Hospital in Columbus in critical condition with severe injuries, including a severed liver and ligature marks. She died just hours later. Authorities ruled her death a homicide, and court records indicate disturbing abuse.

Evaโ€™s mother, Ashley Fagan, and her boyfriend Blake Hutchinson were charged with murder and child endangerment. Both reportedly gave false statements about how Eva was injured. Hutchinson died by suicide as police attempted to arrest him.

Darcyโ€™s grief is compounded by disbelief and regret. โ€œThat weekend, the only one in a long time she wasnโ€™t with me… I wish I had been there,โ€ she said.

Franklin County Children Services (FCCS) confirmed they had multiple past reports involving Evaโ€™s family, dating back to 2019. Allegations included substance exposure and neglect. While prior cases were closed, a case concerning one of Evaโ€™s siblings remained open at the time of her death.

FCCS released a statement acknowledging that support services had not succeeded in preventing isolation โ€” a factor that can obscure signs of abuse.

Darcy blames both the system and Evaโ€™s mother. โ€œI think it was 100% preventable,โ€ she said.

If you suspect child abuse or neglect in your community, call Franklin County Children Services at 614-229-7000.

New Pope: Robert Francis Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV – Columbus Reactions

Columbus, Ohio – On Thursday, May 8, 2025, the world witnessed a historic moment as the Vatican announced the election of the new pope, Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago. He has taken the papal name Pope Leo XIV, becoming the first American pope in history. The announcement came at approximately 1:20 p.m., just 90 minutes after the traditional white smoke signaled that a decision had been made by the College of Cardinals.

A Moment of Global Significance

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a turning point not only for the Catholic Church but also for American Catholics, who have long awaited representation at the highest level of spiritual leadership. His election has sparked reactions across the world โ€” and right here in Columbus, Ohio, faith leaders and public figures shared heartfelt responses.

Diocese of Columbus: โ€œA Moment Guided by the Holy Spiritโ€

The Diocese of Columbus, led by Bishop Earl K. Fernandes, congratulated the new Holy Father via social media. In a Facebook post, the diocese stated:

โ€œThe Diocese of Columbus is abundantly grateful for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the cardinals have chosen the 267th Successor to Peter. We look with great anticipation and excitement as we begin this new chapter in the history of our Catholic Faith and indeed human history. Let us join together in prayer for Pope Leo XIV!โ€

Vice President JD Vance Offers Support

Ohioโ€™s own Vice President JD Vance, a Catholic convert, also took to social media to offer his support and prayers for the new pope. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Vance wrote:

โ€œIโ€™m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!โ€

While the newly elected pope previously reposted a critical article about Vanceโ€™s views on Christian priorities earlier this year, the Vice President’s congratulatory tone reflects the deep spiritual importance of this event.

A New Chapter for the Church โ€” and the World

Pope Leo XIVโ€™s leadership is expected to shape the global Catholic Church in a time of significant cultural and social transformation. As the first American to ascend to the papacy, Robert Francis Prevost brings a unique perspective to the role โ€” one shaped by both his Midwestern American roots and decades of service to the global church.

Columbus and the wider Ohio Catholic community join millions around the world in prayer, hope, and reflection as this new papacy begins. Stay tuned for continued coverage and updates from our newsroom as the world watches this pivotal moment in Church history unfold.

Enaโ€™s Caribbean Kitchen Forms Alliance to Bring Business Back to Cleveland Avenue

Enas Caribbean Kitchen Forms Alliance to Bring Business Back to Cleveland Avenue

Columbus, Ohio – For over 25 years, Enaโ€™s Caribbean Kitchen has been a cornerstone in Columbusโ€™ Linden neighborhood, serving up authentic Jamaican cuisine with heart and heritage. Now, the beloved family-owned restaurant is stepping into a new role: helping shape the future of Cleveland Avenueโ€™s economic revival.

Owner Marlon Hayles remembers when business was boomingโ€”especially on Columbus Crew game days. โ€œPeople came through Linden, they stopped in, and we were packed,โ€ he said. But ever since the Crew moved downtown in 2021, foot traffic has declined significantly.

In response to growing economic gaps in the area, the City of Columbus formed the Linden Economic Development Alliance (LEDA) in late 2023. This initiative aims to attract new businesses to Cleveland Avenue, a vital corridor long under-served in retail and food options.

โ€œWe discovered huge retail shortages when we reassessed the OneLinden Plan,โ€ said De Lena Scales, the cityโ€™s neighborhood liaison. โ€œWe need places people can walk toโ€”coffee shops, salons, grocery storesโ€”and we need anchor businesses like Enaโ€™s to help lead the way.โ€

Hayles welcomes the initiative and stresses the importance of collaboration. โ€œIt canโ€™t just be one or two businesses standing alone,โ€ he said. โ€œWe need others around us to create a real destination for locals and visitors.โ€

Scales echoes that sentiment. โ€œEnaโ€™s stayed when others left. They wear Linden proudly, and theyโ€™re essential to this comeback story.โ€

As Cleveland Avenue prepares for a new era, partnerships like this one signal a brighter, more vibrant future for Lindenโ€”and a renewed spotlight on long-standing local gems like Enaโ€™s Caribbean Kitchen.

Blake Hutchinson Dies by Suicide After Being Charged in 6-Year-Oldโ€™s Homicide in Columbus

Columbus, Ohio – A man at the center of a tragic child homicide case has died by suicide, Columbus police confirm. Blake Hutchinson, 24, who was charged with murder and child endangerment in the death of 6-year-old Eva Bretz, took his own life while being approached by SWAT officers.

The Columbus Division of Police reported that Knox County SWAT had been surveilling a home where Hutchinson was believed to be staying. As he exited the residence, officers moved in, and Hutchinson fatally shot himself before arrest.

Emergency responders were dispatched around 3:30 a.m. on April 13 to a residence in the 4000 block of Migration Lane, near Stelzer Road. Eva Bretz was found unresponsive and rushed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with critical internal injuries, including a severed liver, bruises, and marks consistent with strangulation. She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Franklin County Coroner ruled her death a homicide.

At the time of the incident, Eva was under the care of Hutchinson and her mother, Ashley Fagan, 32. Both adults reportedly gave conflicting accounts and failed to explain Evaโ€™s fatal injuries. Fagan was arrested and is currently held at Franklin County Jail.

The case continues to unfold as authorities review the evidence and statements.
