Columbus Zoo Opens New North America Trek Exhibit on May 23

Columbus, Ohio – After years of planning, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its highly anticipated North America Trek Exhibit on May 23, 2025.

This exciting new attraction marks one of the zoo’s largest expansions in over a decade. Guests are invited to a community dedication ceremony at 10 a.m., after which the exhibit will be officially open to the public.

Covering eight acres, the first phase of the North America Trek transports visitors into a national park-inspired environment, complete with forested trails, rocky landscapes, and immersive wildlife experiences. Visitors will encounter new animal habitats featuring Mexican wolves, bald eagles, river otters, black bears, and more.

The exhibit also introduces the Ohio Center for Wildlife Conservation, a new educational space dedicated to local endangered species such as Plains garter snakes and freshwater mussels.

Jen Fields, Director of Communications at the zoo, confirmed that this phase alone cost approximately $40 million. A second phase is already in the works and is expected to add six more acres of upgraded animal habitats, including spaces for wolverines, moose, and reindeer.

Originally opened in 1985, this revitalized region is designed with a strong focus on conservation, naturalistic design, and animal well-being. The zoo worked closely with PGAV Destinations for the design and Pepper Construction for building, prioritizing sustainability throughout the project.

While the core experience will be ready on May 23, some animals may still be adjusting to their new homes and might not be immediately visible. However, the immersive experience, rich landscapes, and educational features will be fully open for visitors of all ages.

This expansion follows the zooโ€™s previous major projects, including Adventure Cove (opened in 2020) and the Heart of Africa (opened in 2014), continuing the Columbus Zooโ€™s legacy as one of Ohioโ€™s top family destinations.

Bomb Threats at Three Olentangy Elementary Schools Believed to Be a Swatting Hoax

On Monday morning, three Olentangy Elementary Schoolsโ€”Freedom Trail, Oak Creek, and Tyler Run, received reported bomb threats, prompting immediate action from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and district officials.

The schools were placed on a “hold” status, meaning students and staff remained safely in classrooms while security protocols were followed. According to Olentangy Schools, learning continued indoors during the lockdown.

The bomb threats are now believed to be a swatting hoax, as initial investigations by law enforcement have not uncovered credible danger. The Sheriffโ€™s Office confirmed they are continuing to monitor the situation, and law enforcement presence has been increased at all three campuses as a precaution.

The district urged parents not to come to the schools and reassured families that all students are safe. All schools in the district were temporarily placed under โ€œSECUREโ€ mode until the situation was reviewed.

Low Early Voter Turnout Ahead of May 6 Ohio Primary Election

Low early voter turnout observed at Franklin County Board of Elections ahead of May 6 primary elections

Low Early Voter Turnout Ahead of May 6 Ohio Primary Election

Columbus, Ohio – Voters in Columbus Ohio have begun casting their ballots early for the May 6 primary election, but turnout remains noticeably low. According to the Ohio Secretary of Stateโ€™s office, just over 150,000 residents have voted early โ€” a significant drop compared to over 2 million early ballots during the previous presidential election.

The low participation rate is drawing attention from Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, who emphasized the importance of local elections. โ€œThese decisions affect your everyday life,โ€ he said, urging Ohioans to take part in the democratic process.

Voters will weigh in on Issue 2, a statewide measure proposing $2.5 billion in bond funding for public infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges, and water systems. Other key races include Columbus City Council District 7, Columbus Board of Education, and local levies for schools, fire, and police services, as well as a proposed income tax in Lockbourne.

LaRose pointed out that local elections often have a stronger impact on daily life than national contests. โ€œLocal races can be decided by just a few votes,โ€ he noted.

Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Monday, May 5, or returned in person before polls close. Voters must present a valid government-issued ID.

Rodney Hinton Accused of Killing Deputy in Crash After Son Ryan Hinton was Shot by Cincinnati Police

Columbus, Ohio โ€” Rodney Hinton Accused of Killing Deputy in Crash is the tragic headline making waves in Ohio and across the U.S. Hinton, 38, has been charged with aggravated murder after he allegedly struck and killed a Hamilton County Sheriffโ€™s Deputy near the University of Cincinnati on Friday afternoon.

According to police, the crash appeared to be intentional, and the deputyโ€”who was directing traffic for university graduation eventsโ€”was pronounced dead at the scene.

This devastating event took place just one day after Hintonโ€™s 18-year-old son, Ryan Hinton, was shot and killed by Cincinnati police during a foot chase. Officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle, and during the pursuit, Ryan was reportedly seen brandishing a firearm. Police released body camera footage that captured officers shouting, โ€œHeโ€™s got a gun!โ€ before shots were fired behind an apartment complex.

Crash Investigation and Murder Charge

Prosecutors allege that Rodney Hinton deliberately drove into the deputy, using his vehicle as a weapon. During his court appearance on Saturday, a wall of deputies stood behind the courtroom as Hinton was formally charged. The judge denied bail until his next hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Hinton’s attorney stated that he has no prior felony convictions and acknowledged the severity of the charge.

Reaction from Officials

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said in a statement, โ€œI am sickened by what appears to be an intentional act of violence.โ€ Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich added, โ€œIf the facts support this was deliberate, we will prosecute to the full extent of the law.โ€

Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey described the slain deputy as โ€œwell-liked and well-known,โ€ emphasizing the loss felt by the department and the community. The deputy had recently retired from full-time duty but was working an off-duty assignment at the time of the crash.

Police have not yet released the name of the fallen deputy, pending notification of the family. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full motivation behind the crash.

As Ohio mourns the loss of one of its own law enforcement officers, attention turns to the broader circumstances surrounding both deaths in the Hinton family within a span of just 24 hours.

Anthony James Davis Sentenced to 25 Years for Child Rape and Sexual Misconduct in Ohio

Columbus, Ohio – Former girlsโ€™ softball coach Anthony James Davis, aged 30, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to child rape and sexual misconduct involving a 12-year-old girl he coached.

Davis, from West Mansfield, was convicted on multiple charges, including two counts of rape, sexual battery, and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to court records from the Union County Prosecutorโ€™s Office.

The court issued an indeterminate sentence of 25 to 29 years, with no eligibility for early release due to the severity of his crimes. This marks one of the most serious child sexual misconduct cases in the region in recent years.

Concerns first arose in September 2024 when Davis was seen kissing the girl. By October 8, 2024, a formal report was made to Child Protective Services and the Union County Sheriffโ€™s Office, alleging a prolonged inappropriate relationship. Davis was not only the girlโ€™s coach but also a known family friend.

The child was later examined at Nationwide Childrenโ€™s Hospitalโ€™s Child Assessment Center and interviewed by authorities. She disclosed that Davis had initiated sexual acts about a year prior, inside his truck.

Following the investigation, Davis retained legal counsel and chose to plead guilty, accepting a lengthy prison term to avoid trial.

This case coincides with Ohioโ€™s new anti-grooming law, enacted on April 9, 2025, making grooming behaviors toward minors a criminal offense. For parental guidance on protecting children, visit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
