Two Motorcycle Crashes Leave Three Dead

The first crash occurred around 7 p.m. on October 18 at the intersection of Hilliard Rome Road and Roberts Road on the Far West Side. Police say Phillip Baker and passenger Taryn Vargundy were riding a motorcycle when they collided with a Honda Accord. Vargundy was pronounced dead at the scene, and Baker later died at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. The driver of the Honda remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Just hours later, 20-year-old Michael Hollinger died after losing control of his motorcycle on State Route 315 near West North Broadway around 12:30 a.m. on October 19. The motorcycle became unstable, throwing Hollinger onto the roadway. He was taken to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Around 3:45 a.m., 28-year-old Giovany Lepe died in a separate crash on Interstate 70 eastbound near Interstate 670. Police say his Kia Optima veered off the road, struck a hill, and overturned. Lepe, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are urging motorists to remain cautious as investigations continue.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Begins Prison Sentence Over Libyan Campaign Funding Scandal

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has officially begun serving his five-year prison sentence at La Santรฉ Prison in Paris, following his conviction for illegally financing his 2007 presidential campaign with funds allegedly sourced from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The French appeals court upheld the conviction and denied Sarkozyโ€™s request for house arrest, cementing his place in history as the first modern French head of state to be imprisoned. Sarkozy, who continues to proclaim his innocence, was accompanied by his wife Carla Bruni as he arrived at the facility. Supporters gathered outside to show solidarity, insisting that the charges are politically motivated.

This historic ruling highlights Franceโ€™s ongoing efforts to enforce transparency and accountability in political financing.

COTA BELIEVE Team Hosting Free Food Giveaway for Columbus Families

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is set to conclude its 2025 community outreach season with a major free produce giveaway on Wednesday, October 22, aimed at supporting families in need on Columbusโ€™ South Side.

The BELIEVE Team, a resource group within COTA, will host the event starting at 3 p.m. at the Kroger grocery store, 3637 S. High Street, in the Great Southern Shopping Center, according to a COTA media release.

BELIEVE โ€” short for Black Employees Leading in Inclusion, Excellence, Vision, and Education, is a team of COTA employees committed to helping local communities thrive through service, education, and inclusion.

The team will distribute free fruits and vegetables to families on a first-come, first-served basis. The produce is provided through partnerships with the Mid-Ohio Food Collective and Kroger.

Since launching in 2022, the BELIEVE Team has provided thousands of families across Central Ohio with nutritious food. COTA estimates that more than 8,000 pounds of produce will be distributed within a few hours during this event.

This will be COTAโ€™s final produce stand for 2025, but more community food distribution events are already being planned for 2026 to continue addressing food insecurity in Columbus.

COTA says initiatives like these reflect their ongoing mission to empower, uplift, and nourish the communities they serve.

Columbus Pays $1M Settlement Over Wrongful Child Custody Case

Columbus , Ohio – The City of Columbus has agreed to pay a $1 million settlement to a father after two rookie police officers mistakenly gave his 7-year-old son to his noncustodial mother in October 2023, leading to a seven-month disappearance.

The Columbus City Council approved the settlement in a unanimous 9-0 vote on October 20, compensating Lonnie Henry and his son, identified as K.G. The officers involved, Jacob Jernigan and Colby Scott, were both first-year police officers at the time.

City officials expressed outrage over the incident. Councilmember Nick Bankston called it a โ€œstupidโ€ mistake and said the city would have certainly lost the case if it went to trial.

Henryโ€™s son was safely recovered in May 2024 after U.S. Marshals arrested the boyโ€™s mother, Shadasia Gillyard, who is now facing multiple felony charges, including felonious assault. According to Henryโ€™s attorney, Barton R. Keyes, Gillyard allegedly physically abused K.G. and kept him out of school during those seven months.

โ€œThis case underscores the importance of proper police training,โ€ Keyes said, emphasizing that both officers lacked understanding of legal documents. Officer Scott later admitted he did not know the difference between a motion and a court order when Gillyard presented paperwork to retrieve the child.

The Columbus Department of the Inspector General confirmed that both officers violated police policy. They have since been retrained and disciplined, and new training on legal document verification has been incorporated into annual officer education.

Keyes noted that there was little action by Columbus police to locate the missing child, no Amber Alerts or multi-agency alerts were issued. Only in April 2024 did the U.S. Marshals release a public statement seeking help to find Gillyard and K.G.

The case aligns with findings from The Columbus Dispatchโ€™s award-winning investigation โ€œVanished,โ€ which revealed that Ohio law enforcement often fails to use all available tools to locate missing persons. Following the report, Governor Mike DeWine created a statewide task force to strengthen Ohioโ€™s response to missing person cases.

Henry hopes this settlement will push the city to invest in better officer training and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

President Donald Trump Considers Buying Argentinian Beef to Lower U.S. Meat Prices

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States may begin purchasing beef from Argentina as part of his strategy to reduce high meat prices for American consumers.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during a flight from Florida to Washington, Trump said,

โ€œWe would buy some beef from Argentina. If we do that, that will bring our beef prices down.โ€

Trumpโ€™s comments follow his recent pledge to tackle rising inflation, which has been driven in part by soaring beef prices across the country. Analysts attribute the price surge to prolonged drought conditions, higher feed costs, and reduced cattle imports from Mexico, where herds have been affected by a flesh-eating pest outbreak.

The presidentโ€™s proposal could mark a significant step in strengthening trade relations with Argentina while easing domestic food costs. Reports indicate that Trump has also been working on a $20 billion credit swap line and additional financing support to help stabilize Argentinaโ€™s collapsing currency ahead of its midterm elections.

The economic plan aligns with Trumpโ€™s commitment to supporting his ally, Argentine President Javier Milei, as both leaders seek to reinforce ties between the two nations through mutually beneficial trade and financial initiatives.

Ohio National Move Over Day 2025

The Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio State Highway Patrol remind drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles during National Move Over Day.

Ohio National Move Over Day 2025

As Ohio prepares to mark National Move Over Day this Saturday, the reminder comes at a tragic time just days after an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was struck and killed while assisting a stranded driver.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) joined forces to emphasize the importance of the observance, held annually on the third Saturday of October. The campaign urges drivers to slow down and move over when passing any stationary vehicle displaying flashing lights, including police, firefighters, tow trucks, and other roadside workers.

Authorities say the law is simple: on highways with two or more lanes, motorists must shift to the farthest lane away from stopped vehicles with flashing lights. The goal is to save lives and protect those who risk theirs daily on the roadside.

โ€œIt is definitely scary, especially in construction zones with narrow shoulders, it gives us little room to work,โ€ said Kenneth Schulte, a roadside assistance worker. โ€œMany drivers are distracted or on their phones. I have had close calls myself.โ€

According to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute, 19 traffic incident management responders across the U.S. have lost their lives this year alone due to roadside crashes.

Officials hope that this yearโ€™s National Move Over Day will remind drivers to stay alert and make Ohio roads safer for everyone.

Marion County Mother Sentenced to 3 Years After Dog Attacks 6-Month-Old Baby to Death

A Marion County mother has been sentenced to three years in prison after her six-month-old baby was mauled to death by a dog earlier this year.

According to the Marion County Court of Common Pleas, Alyssa Smith received the maximum sentence for child endangerment following the April 2024 tragedy. Investigations revealed that Smith left her infant, baby Royal, unsupervised with another young child and her boyfriendโ€™s Pitbull, which then fatally attacked the baby.

In a statement, Marion County Prosecutor Raymond Grogan said the sentencing reflects accountability for a heartbreaking act of neglect. โ€œSmithโ€™s disregard for the dogโ€™s known aggressive behavior shows a pattern of irresponsibility that resulted in the death of her infant,โ€ Grogan said.

Smithโ€™s boyfriend, Blake Bates, has already pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection to the fatal attack and is awaiting sentencing.

Authorities emphasize that the case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of leaving children unattended with pets, especially those with a known violent history.
